Why I’m running
As a farmer and lifelong resident of Franklin County with a 40-year career as an attorney and Superior Court judge, and with several years’ experience as a retail business owner, I am concerned about the future of our county in particular and Vermont in general.
Currently, we have a divided government with many citizens entrenched in their political, social, and economic views. On the national scene it is even worse. This is not a formula for progress or for resolving the problems we face.
I have devoted my professional life to addressing differences between parties and to resolving disputes. That process has taught me that with focus, some effort, and know-how, it is always possible to find a solution to a problem, no matter how consequential the problem might be.
That is why I am running as a moderate Democrat for a seat in the Vermont Senate, representing Franklin County (except Fairfax and Montgomery) and Alburgh. We can move forward and make substantial progress on all issues if we work together and treat everyone with respect and fairness. My experience and motivation give me the tools to achieve these essential goals.

Improve the affordability of Vermont life
This requires the state to cut spending in several areas in a reasonable manner, to grow our economy using good business sense, and to modify the Act 250 process to reduce delays and expenses.

Ensure equal protection under the law for all Vermonters
This requires that everyone in our state, regardless of age, color, gender, or religious beliefs, receive equal treatment and equal protection under the law.

Protect and preserve our agricultural economy
This requires sensible environmental regulation and expansion of value-added dairy products and markets. Dairy prices, incomes, and costs of production must be stabilized.

Improve the criminal justice process and judicial system
This requires that offenders with multiple cases pending be processed in an expedited manner to substantially reduce the number of retail thefts, auto thefts, assaults, disorderly conduct offenses, and drug offenses.
